The Junior Years

The Junior Department comprises of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Officially these years are called Key Stage 2. In the Junior Department we aim to:
  • Provide a safe and simulating environment in which students can develop emotionally creatively, physically and academically.

  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum which:

  • Acknowledges and builds upon what the students have already experienced and learned.

  • Meets individual children’s needs.

  • Enables learning in a familiar, purposeful and supportive environment.

  • Teaches independence

In Key Stage 2 students begin each day joining the rest of the school for a five minute flag raising ceremony.  At this time the Head of School or Deputy Head will address the students. Students then proceed to their classes to be registered and welcomed.

At the lower end of Key Stage 2 the class teacher is responsible for delivering most of the lessons, as students enter the higher classes they encounter more specialist teachers.

To ensure the family atmosphere is retained throughout the Key Stage the class teacher includes time for reflection and discussion as part of the Social and Personal development of the students.

The curriculum
  • Uses the National Curriculum of England as its basic structure whilst drawing upon the richness of life in Venezuela.
  • It is carefully planned to ensure continuity and progression bridging the gap from the topic based teaching of Key Stage 1 to specialist teaching of Key Stage 3.

In Key Stage 2 the school day is divided into 9 lessons. Frequently, there are double lessons to ensure the necessary time is dedicated to each area of study. Each teacher  organizes the class timetable and students are given copies of this for their own reference.

Homework Policy

We believe homework is important because it:

  • encourages and promotes good private study habits and attitudes

  • reinforces lessons and generates practice of those topics taught

  • consolidates learning through revision

  • prepares students for future study

  • encourages individual learning, research and reading

Years 3 and 4
Homework at this stage should not require more than 20 minutes of concentrated effort to complete.

  • reading everyday

  • learning tasks – spelling words and multiplication tables. By the end of Year 3 all children should have instant recall of all multiplication facts up to 10 x 10. These will then be practiced and used regularly from Year 4 upwards

  • Written tasks will be set in addition to the above as required by the teacher

Years 5 and 6
Homework at this stage should not require more than 30-45 minutes of concentrated effort to complete.

  • Reading every day. Pupils of this age are expected to read for pleasure and for information in a self-disciplined way.

  • Children will be continued to be tested on their tables

  • Class teachers will set a homework timetable and this will be given to the pupils.
