Information for New Staff

Recommended vaccinations:

  • Polio, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Measles, Mumps and Rubella.  These are vaccinations that are normally given when you are a child. The only booster you may require is tetanus as it only gives protection for 10 years.
  • Hepatitis A (booster may be required)
  • Hepatitis B (booster may be required)
  • Yellow Fever is a must. You may have to provide an up-to-date certificate to travel into countries such as Costa Rica, Brazil and some of the Caribbean Islands.
  • Malaria tablets if you plan to travel into the interior of Venezuela for extended periods or to some other South America countries.

Malaria
There is no malaria in Caracas or the surrounding areas. If you plan to go into the interior, however (there are many organized trips) then you may need to take malaria tablets. You take the malaria tablets for a month before you go travelling so bring a supply with you if possible.
Dengue Fever
At certain times of the year there is a risk of dengue fever in Caracas. Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes and there are preventative measures in place to provide protection such as spraying the city to kill mosquitoes.  The school nurse provides information on how to take precautions. If you are one of the unlucky few people to come down with dengue the medical care is very good in Venezuela.
General Advice
a)  Bring at least 6 months supply of any medications that you are taking. This includes inhalers, the contraceptive pill, skin creams etc as this will give you time to find your feet before you have to go to the doctor here to renew prescriptions.
b) Bring all medications in your hand luggage not your shipment as it may delay the releasing of your shipment.
c) Some people are more prone to be bitten by insects than others and if you are one of those people then bring a good antihistamine cream such as Boots Sting relief cream which is cheap and very effective. You can buy insect repellents in Venezuela.
